NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE   The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has made its “Cancer Mortality Maps and Graphs” Web site available to the public. NCI wanted to make the huge volume of information in the database available on a Web site that was intuitive and meaningful. They also wanted to comply with the Federal Information Technology Accessibility Initiative (Section 508), which requires that Federal agencies' electronic and information technology be accessible to people with disabilities.

The Web site lists forty different cancers for all 50 states and their 3000+ counties, as well as time period, age, gender and ethnic background. The data is viewed in such a way that any visitor can find the cancer mortality rate down to the county level for any of the 40 cancers tracked.

“As a somewhat visually-challenged Federal employee, I have a special appreciation for D-link functionality. PopChart gives visually-impaired individuals the ability to "see" graphs with the use of descriptive text.

The National Cancer Institute site illustrates how PopChart can take massive amounts of data that are virtually incomprehensible without graphs and make that information understandable and useful for showing trends and making analysis.
